I began my work here in the Kuchroo Laboratory back in July of 2006. Being a recent graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and receiving a B.S. in Pre-Medical and Health Sciences, I quickly realized how much I had yet to learn. I started off by learning the basics of managing the breeding and genotyping of many transgenic and knock out mice within the central colonies in the lab. It wasn’t long before I was deemed the official title of Genotyping Extraordinaire (given to me by Dr. Kuchroo himself). I became known as the Pied Piper of the animal facility for my work with the mice, but with all great power comes great responsibility. From these essential skills, I was able to branch off and explore the other fascinating aspects of research within the lab through the training and guidance from Dr. Ana Anderson. I am currently involved in two different projects including the study of the Tim3 molecule, a Th1 specific marker, and also the NOD/Idd3 genetic interval on regulatory and effector cells in NOD mice. From Genotyping Extraordinaire, I was able to attain several other titles including FACS Fetus (FACS Analysis being extremely difficult to fully harness its power), LNH (for my ability to target the evasive lymph nodes in mice), and ELISA Master (after achieving two consecutive r^2 values of 1.0 without removing any points in the standard curve). My goal throughout my time in this lab is to utilize all of my skills whether it be genotyping, cytokine analysis, flow analysis, the Kuchroo Times, dancing, or singing, towards the betterment of the lab. My future goal, like many technicians, is to pursue a medical degree and become a physician. During my time devoted to the lab however, I hope to gain many skills and learn as much as I can through hard work and enthusiasm for learning. |
